The Fourth Regiment Cocktail

Hat tip to Punch Drink for the inspiration. I only slightly modified it.

I’ve been drifting for years towards more boozy, savory drinks and this one fits the bill just fine. The standard version calls for equal parts rye whiskey and sweet vermouth, plus dashes of orange, Angostura, and celery bitters. I added a half ounce more of the whiskey just because. I had never even heard of celery bitters until I found this cocktail recipe. The slight addition makes a major difference to a standard Manhattan to which the recipe is attributed to.

From what I’ve read, the Fourth Regiment cocktail has a murky history. It is generally thought to have originated in the late 19th century. Regardless of its origins, the Fourth Regiment is a classic cocktail that is still enjoyed today.

Ingredients in a Fourth Regiment

  • 2 OZ. Rye Whiskey (I prefer Willet Family Estate)
  • 1 1/2 OZ. Sweet Vermouth
  • 2 Dashes Celery Bitters
  • 1 Dash Peychaud’s Bitters
  • 1 Dash Orange Bitters
  • Lemon or orange peel to garnish

How to make a Fourth Regiment

  1. Combine rye whiskey, sweet vermouth and the three bitters in a mixing glass with ice. Stir 20-30 seconds until chilled.
  2. Strain into glass. I used a Nick and Nora glass.
  3. Garnish with peel and enjoy.
