I have posted several versions of an Old Fashioned. It is my favorite drink.
Fall is not my favorite season. More accurately, I don’t like winter. Fall being winters predecessor, it makes me not like fall. This Old Fashioned makes the fall a little more palatable. The first recipe I found similar to this seemed WAY too sweet. This is a booze forward drink. You can double the simple syrup and the apple butter if you want a sweeter version.
Simple syrup is so easy to make. If you need a recipe try this one: Ginger Simple Syrup.
I tried this recipe several different ways. First time had less apple butter and simple syrup. I combined ingredients and stirred, serving more like a Manhattan in an Nick and Nora glass without ice. It was good. Next I tried, a little more apple butter and used the shaker to combine. I know, I know, you aren’t supposed to shake an Old Fashioned, but I do. Especially with the apple butter, it helps to combine the drink when shaken. I also used my cocktail smoker. All versions I tried were garnished with a cinnamon stick, which is fun and the aroma is great. In the end, I landed on the recipe below.
Ingredients for a Fall Old Fashioned
- 2 ounces bourbon (I like a good barrel proof)
- 1/2 ounce Ginger simple syrup
- 1 tbsp Apple Butter
- 2 dashes orange bitters
- 1 Cinnamon stick, for garnish
- 1 orange peel, for garnish
How to make a Fall Old Fashioned
- In a cocktail shaker, combine bourbon, simple syrup, apple butter and bitters. Add ice and shake for 10-20 seconds until combined and cold.
- Strain the drink into a cocktail glass with a large ice cube.
- Garnish with Cinnamon stick and orange peel.
- Enjoy! Happy Fall Y’all.
