Perfect Manhattan Cocktail

Saying anything is “Perfect” is saying a lot. In the case of the “Perfect Manhattan” cocktail, it just means instead of the traditional Manhattan, which has only sweet vermouth, this version has equal parts sweet and dry vermouth.

The Perfect Manhattan was created as an homage to the Perfect Martini. In that case, instead of just the dry vermouth, they also split it 50/50 with sweet vermouth. In both cases splitting the vermouth adds some complexity and nuance.

My preference is for cocktails to be boozier and savory. If I’m having a martini, it is most likely going to be very dry and dirty. So, when I can make an already boozy Manhattan a little less sweet, I’m down.

Ingredients for the Perfect Manhattan

  • 2 oz. rye whiskey
  • 0.5 oz. sweet vermouth
  • 0.5 oz. dry vermouth
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 1/2 tsp juice from Luxardo cherries
  • Luxardo brandied cherries to garnish
  • Lemon twist to garnish

How to make the Perfect Manhattan

  1. Add rye whiskey, dry vermouth, sweet vermouth and bitters into a mixing glass with ice. Stir 20-30 seconds until well-chilled.
  2. Strain into a chilled Nick & Nora glass or cocktail glass.
  3. Garnish with a brandied cherry and a lemon twist.
