I did some research awhile back about the Improved Whiskey cocktail. From what I remember, the story goes that “back in the day”, in mid to late 1800s, a cocktail just meant a liquor (think gin, vodka, whiskey), maybe some sugar or bitters and water. The Improved part of the name came with the addition of some European imports like maraschino liqueur or absinthe. This drink only stokes my fascination with old school cocktails.
The original recipe does not call strawberry simple syrup. I made some homemade Local Strawberry Ice Cream and had some syrup left over. You can substitute any simple syrup or a sugar cube. You could even use my Ginger Simple Syrup to add a little kick.
I believe this drink is supposed to be served on the rocks but thought I’d try it up and neat first. I did like it but adding the ice balanced this very booze forward and sour cocktail.
Ingredients for an Improved Whiskey Cocktail

- 1/4 ounce maraschino liqueur

How to make an Improved Whiskey Cocktail
