The Preakness Cocktail

The Kentucky Derby has the mint julip, the Preakness Stakes has, well, The Preakness. I don’t think this is the “official” drink of the horse race but it is named after it. The Preakness cocktail is a riff off the classic Manhattan. In this variant, Benedictine is add for a very different botanical nuance.

Ingredients for a Preakness Cocktail

  • 1 1/2 ounces American rye whiskey
  • 3/4 ounce sweet vermouth
  • 1/4 ounce Benedictine
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • Lemon twist to garnish

How to make a Preakness Cocktail

  • Add rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, benedictine and bitters into a cocktail mixing glass with ice. Stir until well chilled.
  • Strain into a chilled coupe or Nick and Nora cocktail glass.
  • Garnish with a lemon twist.
  • Enjoy!
