Martinez Cocktail

The Martinez dates back to the 1800s and is inline with my trend toward old school and boozy cocktails. From what I’ve read about this drink, the origins are in question but it is said to have influenced the modern Martini, which I like very much (Classic Martini Cocktail, Very Dirty Martini Cocktail with Smoked Blue Cheese Stuffed Olives and Vesper Martini Cocktail). It is also said to be a cross between a Martini and Manhattan, which I also love (Perfect Manhattan Cocktail, Dry Manhattan (Brooklyn) Cocktail, Black Manhattan Cocktail and French Manhattan Cocktail).

From my research, the original cocktail had equal parts gin (probably Old Tom) and sweet vermouth. I used my usual Bombay Sapphire gin but I increased the gin and decreased the sweet vermouth to fit my personal palate.

Ingredients for a Martinez Cocktail

  • 2 ounces London Dry Gin
  • 1 ounces sweet vermouth
  • 1/4 ounce Luxardo maraschino liqueur
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Orange twist for garnish

How to make a Martinez Cocktail

  1. Add the gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur and bitters to a mixing glass with plenty of ice.
  2. Stir until well chilled, about 20 seconds.
  3. Strain into a coupe or Nick and Nora glass.
  4. Garnish with an orange twist.
  5. Enjoy.
