The Kangaroo Cocktail (Vodka Martini)

I’ll say this up front, I prefer gin to vodka. Especially in a martini. I get the appeal of vodka but I like the botanical nuance of a good gin. The Kangaroo cocktail was created in NYC in the 1940s. I believe it was given the name to excite and interest rather than just call it a vodka martini. I’ve read several recipes but the below is my favorite. If you must use vodka in a martini here you go…

Ingredients for a Kangaroo Cocktail

  • 2 1/2 oz vodka (we like Grey Goose)
  • 1 oz Lillet Blanc (or dry vermouth)
  • 1-2 dashes orange bitters
  • Expressed lemon twist or 1 olive for garnish

How to make a Kangaroo Cocktail

  1. Add vodka, Lillet Blanc and bitters to a cocktail mixing glass with ice.
  2. Stir until well chilled and combined.
  3. Fine strain the cocktail into a chilled martini glass
  4. Express a lemon twist and garnish.
  5. Enjoy!
