The Blue Ridge Manhattan was inspired by many things close to home. My family is from the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, and we now live at the base of those mountains. We also keep a place on Lake Lure, NC, right in the heart of the Blue Ridge.
On a recent trip to Lake Lure, we visited one of our favorite restaurants, Appalachia (read my review). My wife ordered a cocktail called the Fiore e Pepe (I even created a copycat recipe), which introduced me to black peppercorn simple syrup. That became the spark.
Blueberries are another favorite of ours, especially when fresh and in season. Pair that with my love of bourbon and Manhattans, and the Blue Ridge Manhattan practically created itself. Drinks like my Summer Peach Manhattan, Bourbon Peach Grand Smash, and the Fiore e Pepe all played a role in shaping it.
Why does the Blue Ridge Manhattan work?🫐🌶️
- Balance of Sweet & Spice
- The black peppercorn simple syrup adds subtle heat and complexity, which balances the natural sweetness of blueberries and the richness of bourbon/rye.
- Depth from Barrel Proof Whiskey
- Higher-proof bourbon or rye has bold caramel, vanilla, and spice notes that can stand up to the fruit and pepper without being overpowered.
- Fresh Blueberries = Brightness
- Muddling blueberries introduces a tart, juicy pop that lightens the cocktail, preventing it from being too heavy.
- Bitters Tie It Together
- Aromatic bitters bring warmth (clove, cinnamon, baking spice), while orange bitters add citrus brightness — both elevate the blueberry and pepper flavors.
- Familiar Yet Unique
- It keeps the classic Manhattan structure (spirit + modifier + bitters), but twists it with seasonal fruit and spice for something creative and memorable.
👉 Essentially, it’s a cocktail of contrast and harmony: bold vs. delicate, spicy vs. sweet, familiar vs. surprising.
This cocktail balances the richness of barrel-proof bourbon with the tart brightness of fresh blueberries and a subtle kick of black peppercorn syrup. Bitters tie it all together, creating a drink that is both familiar and refreshingly original, a true taste of the Blue Ridge.
