Poet’s Dream Cocktail

A Modern Spin on a Classic: The Poet’s Dream Cocktail

The Poet’s Dream is a spirit-forward classic that dates back to the early 20th century—traditionally built on a base of London Dry Gin. But swapping the gin for a clean, premium vodka turns this drink into a remarkably silky, elegant and modern riff.

By replacing gin’s heavy juniper backbone with vodka, the herbal complexity of the dry vermouth and the rich, honeyed spices of the Bénédictine take center stage. The result is a smooth, wonderfully balanced cocktail that feels both timeless and sophisticated.

Why this works

The key to a great spirit-forward cocktail is proportion. Bénédictine is a powerful herbal liqueur packed with notes of saffron, honey, nutmeg and citrus peel—a little goes a very long way.

  • The Base (2 oz. Vodka): Provides a clean, velvety canvas that carries the aromatics of the other ingredients without overwhelming them.
  • The Dryness (0.75 oz. Dry Vermouth): Cuts through the sweetness, bringing crisp wine acidity and subtle herbal undertones.
  • The Accent (0.25 oz. or less Bénédictine): Acts as the secret weapon, adding warmth, depth and just enough sweetness to round out the palate.
  • The Finish (Expresses Lemon Peel): A quick twist of lemon oil over the surface lifts the entire drink, brightening the nose and balancing the rich Bénédictine.

Ingredients for the Poet’s Dream

  • 2 oz. vodka
  • 0.75 oz. dry vermouth
  • 0.25 oz. or less Bénédictine
  • Lemon peel for garnish

How to make the Poet’s Dream

Unlike shaken cocktails that introduce aeration and ice chips, a stirred drink preserves a clear, silky texture and a heavier mouthfeel, ideal for a martini-style sip.

  1. Chill the Glass: Place your coupe in the freezer for 5–10 minutes beforehand, or fill it with ice water while you mix.
  2. Combine: In a mixing glass, add the vodka, dry vermouth and Bénédictine.
  3. Add Ice & Stir: Fill the mixing glass 3/4 full with solid ice cubes. Stir steadily for 20 to 30 seconds until the glass is frost-cold to the touch and properly diluted.
  4. Strain: Discard the ice from your chilled coupe and double strain the mixture into the glass.
  5. Garnish: Express the essential oils from a fresh lemon peel over the top of the glass, rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink.
