Kentucky Flyer Cocktail

The Kentucky Flyer Cocktail (Featuring Willett Family Estate)

If you love a classic Aviation or enjoy a rich, spirit-forward cocktail with a crisp citrus bite, the Kentucky Flyer deserves a permanent spot in your rotation.

While it drinks like a drink born in the pre-Prohibition era, the Kentucky Flyer is actually a modern creation. It was developed in the early 2000s as a dark-spirit spin on Hugo Ensslin’s legendary 1916 Aviation cocktail. The original Aviation relied on gin, Maraschino liqueur, lemon juice and Crème de Violette to give it a pale sky-blue hue reminiscent of early 20th-century flight.

The Kentucky Flyer strips away the flora and floral notes of the original, substituting the clean botanical bite of gin for the bold, spicy backbone of Kentucky Rye Whiskey. What you’re left with is a stunningly balanced cocktail where the deep, herbal spice of rye cuts right through the sweet, nutty cherry notes of Luxardo Maraschino and the sharp snap of fresh lemon.

Why the Rye Matters (And Why Willett Takes Off)

Because this recipe relies on just three core liquid ingredients, the choice of whiskey isn’t just important—it drives the whole ship.

My go-to choice here (and truthfully, my absolute favorite distillery overall) is Willett.

The Willett Family Estate Small Batch Rye brings that unmistakable Bardstown character to the glass. It packs a rich, complex punch of baking spices, mint, rye spice and subtle floral warmth that holds its ground effortlessly against the sweet density of Luxardo Maraschino. Where a lower-proof or less assertive rye might get swallowed up by the cherry liqueur, Willett stands tall and gives the drink real structure and authority.

The Recipe: Kentucky Flyer

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Rye Whiskey (Willett Family Estate Small Batch Rye)
  • 3/4 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
  • 1/2 oz Lemon Juice, freshly squeezed
  • 2 Brandied Cherries (Luxardo)
  • 1 fresh Mint Sprig

How to Make It

  1. Chill Your Glass: Place a coupe glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes while you assemble your ingredients.
  2. Combine: In a cocktail shaker, add the Willett Family Estate Rye, Luxardo Maraschino and fresh lemon juice.
  3. Shake Hard: Fill the shaker with plenty of solid ice. Seal and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the tin is completely frosted over.
  4. Strain & Serve: Double-strain into your chilled coupe glass to catch any loose ice chips.
  5. Garnish: Skewer two rich brandied cherries on a pick, drop them into the glass and place a freshly slapped mint sprig on the rim to release those subtle aromatic oils as you take your first sip.

Pro-Tips for the Perfect Pour

  • Don’t Over-Pour the Maraschino: Luxardo Maraschino is potent, sweet and funky. Sticking strictly to the 3/4 oz measurement ensures it acts as a sweet, complex modifier rather than a sugar bomb.
  • Slap the Mint: Right before setting your mint sprig on the glass, slap it gently between your palms. This breaks the surface cells and releases the essential oils, elevating the aroma of the rye and lemon as you drink.
