Dirty Road Martini Cocktail

Dolly Parton’s Dirt Road Martini: A Taste of the Smoky Mountains

There is a specific kind of comfort that comes from music when you are living far away from where your from. For me, no matter where I have lived or traveled across the world, listening to Dolly Parton has always brought me right back home.

Dolly grew up in Sevier County, Tennessee, tucked into the Great Smoky Mountains. My own family roots run deep just across the state line in the same mountain range, around Biltmore and Edneyville, North Carolina. That shared sense of place, raised among the ridges and hollows of the Smokies, makes her music feel like a direct link to home.

When I first came across the Dirt Road Martini, I was skeptical. In full transparency, I didn’t love this drink on my first sip. My wife did, but I wasn’t immediately impressed. The combination of unsweetened tea and spicy pickled giardiniera brine felt like an unexpected left turn for a cocktail. But the more I drank, the more I came around on it.

It takes the classic savory profile of a dirty martini and grounds it with cold-brewed tea. The result is a drink that turns out to be rustic, bold and surprisingly refreshing once you let the flavors settle.

Ingredients for a Dirty Road

  • 2 oz vodka
  • 2 oz unsweetened tea, chilled
  • 1/4 oz brine from Italian giardiniera
  • Martini olives (pitted or stuffed), for garnish
  • Vegetable pieces from Italian mix giardiniera, for garnish

How to make a Dirty Road

  • Chill the Glass: Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes before mixing.
  • Combine: Fill a cocktail mixing glass with solid ice. Add the vodka, chilled unsweetened tea and giardiniera brine.
  • Stir: Stir smoothly with a bar spoon for about 30 seconds until the mixture is thoroughly chilled and properly diluted.
  • Strain and Garnish: Strain into your chilled glass over ice. Skewer a couple of martini olives along with crisp pieces of giardiniera vegetables (like cauliflower, carrots or peppers) on a cocktail pick and rest across the rim.

Key Notes

  • Dolly’s Only Official Cocktail: Dolly has long admitted she rarely drinks alcohol, making this recipe from her Good Lookin’ Cookin’ cookbook a genuine novelty. Replacing vermouth with unsweetened black tea keeps the alcohol percentage lower and grounds the drink in Southern hospitality.
  • Give It a Minute: Because of the tannins in the tea and the sharp vinegar bite of the giardiniera brine, this cocktail takes a sip or two to calibrate your palate. Let it warm up on you.
  • The Brine: Using Italian giardiniera brine instead of standard olive brine introduces a subtle heat and vinegary bite from the pickled peppers and spices that pairs remarkably well with the vodka.
  • Unsweetened Tea: Make sure your black tea is completely chilled and unsweetened. The tea adds earthiness, color and structural tannic weight.
  • Stir to Chill: A steady stir keeps the texture smooth without watering down the bold savory elements of the drink.
