Corpse Reviver No. 1 Cocktail

One of my favorite cocktails I made in 2023 was the Corpse Reviver No. 2. That drink has gin, lemon juice, Grand Marnier, dry vermouth with an Absinthe rinse. It is truly delicious. Below is part of the description of my version of the Corpse Reviver No. 2:.

This is my favorite non whiskey drink I’ve made in a long time. The Corpse Reviver No 2 is inline with my recent preference for savory and booze forward drinks, just with gin not whiskey. It has some pop but the sweet from the Grand Marnier balances the sour from the lemon. The botanical flavors from the gin pair well with the aromas of the absinth rinse.

In researching recipes for other Cocktails I came across the Corpse Reviver No. 1. It never occurred to me that if there was a No. 2, that there was a No. 1. Sure enough, there was. This one is also fun.

As far as I can tell the original recipe for the Corpse Reviver No. 1 includes 1 1/2 oz Cognac, 3/4 oz Calvados or Apple Brandy, 3/4 sweet vermouth and 1 dash orange bitters. I only slightly modified with the addition of the Armagnac. I also upped measures so I would has some extra “sidecar”.

Ingredients for Corpse Reviver No. 1

  • 2 oz Armagnac
  • 1 oz apple brandy
  • 1 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • 2 dashes orange bitters
  • Luxardo cherry for garnish

How to make a Corpse Reviver No. 1

  1. Add Armagnac, apple brandy, vermouth and orange bitters to a mixing glass with ice. Stir for 10-15 seconds until very cold.
  2. Strain into a coupe or Nick and Nora glass and garnish with a cherry.
