Fitty Fitty (50/50) Martini Cocktail

The 50/50 Martini: The Equal-Parts Classic That Changed My Mind

For years, I was a gin loyalist when it came to Martinis. My ideal ratio leaned heavily toward the spirit: a generous pour of London dry gin, a tiny splash of dry vermouth, a dash of orange bitters or olive brine and a lemon twist or three olives. To me, vermouth was an afterthought that needed to be kept to an absolute minimum.

When I first came across the 50/50 Martini, I resisted it. The idea of letting dry vermouth share equal billing with gin felt like a guaranteed path to a diluted, overly winey drink.

I was wrong.

When made with fresh ingredients and stirred until bone chillingly cold, the equal-parts ratio works exceptionally well. The extra vermouth softens the sharp edge of the gin, opening up subtle botanical and herbal notes that usually get buried. It also creates a lower-proof cocktail that delivers the ritual of a traditional Martini without the immediate heavy hit, making it ideal before dinner.

A Quick History of the 50/50 Martini

While the modern resurgence of the 50/50 Martini was largely driven by the craft cocktail revival of the late 2000s, its roots go back to the late 19th century.

In the early days of the Martini, drink ratios were much wetter than today’s standard. Recipes in historic manuals routinely called for equal parts gin and vermouth, often finished with a dash of orange bitters. As the decades progressed, vermouth slowly fell out of favor, leading to the dry, spirit-heavy builds that dominated the mid-20th century.

The revival of the 50/50 restored respect to vermouth, proving that when kept fresh, fortified wine is an essential partner rather than something to hide.

Ingredients for a 50/50 Martini

  • 1 1/2 oz dry London gin
  • 1 1/2 oz dry vermouth
  • 1-2 dashes orange bitters
  • Lemon twist or olives to garnish

How to make a 50/50 Martini

  1. Prep the Glass: Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for 15 minutes before mixing.
  2. Combine: Fill a cocktail mixing glass with solid ice. Pour in the dry London gin, dry vermouth and orange bitters.
  3. Stir: Stir smoothly with a bar spoon for roughly 30 seconds until completely chilled and properly diluted.
  4. Strain and Garnish: Strain into your chilled glass. Express the oils of a lemon twist over the surface, or garnish with three olives on a pick.
  5. Enjoy!
