American Trilogy Cocktail

The American Trilogy is way more modern then most cocktails I have been posting recently. 2007 to be exact. I did find it compelling because the recipe calls for Apple Jack (or Apple Brandy), which according to the internet is the first distilled spirit in the United States. Rye whiskey is the OG of American whiskeys. The original cocktail calls for a splash of soda but I REALLY like Blenheim ginger ale (made here in South Carolina) so I substituted.

I made this the first time as per the original recipe which calls for equal parts apple brandy and rye whiskey. I used an 86 proof Applejack and Rittenhouse Bottle-in-Bond. That combination was good but it felt “light” or watered down. I made the same drink again but this time I used a single barrel rye that was around 120 proof. I also added 1.5 ounces of rye instead of just 1. This change made the drink much better for me and my preference for a more booze forward cocktail.

Ingredients for an American Trilogy Cocktail

  • 1 ounce Apple Jack Bottle in Bond
  • 1.5 ounce rye whiskey (higher proof, single barrel is ideal)
  • 1 brown sugar cube
  • 2 dashes orange bitters
  • 1 splash of ginger ale (we like Blenheim hot)
  • Orange twist for garnish

How to make an American Trilogy Cocktail

  1. Add the sugar cube, bitters and small splash of the ginger ale to an mixing glass.
  2. Muddle mixture.
  3. Add rye whiskey, Apple Jack with ice cubes.
  4. Stir to combine and chill.
  5. Pour mixture into an Old Fashioned glass. Express and garnish with an orange twist.
